The Elephant House

This is a cafe in Edinburgh where J.K. Rowling spent time writing the early Harry Potter books. It’s often referred to as “the birthplace of Harry Potter.” The cafe has since embraced its connection to the series and even has signs acknowledging Rowling’s patronage. (currently closed)

George Heriot's School

This school is thought to have inspired the architecture of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The school’s four houses might have inspired the house system in Hogwarts as well.

Victoria Street and Diagon Alley

Victoria Street in Edinburgh is a curving, colorful street lined with various shops. It’s often said to have been an inspiration for the magical shopping street Diagon Alley in the series.

Greyfriars Kirkyard

This cemetery features gravestones with names that may have influenced character names in the books, such as Tom Riddle, a name that became significant in the series.

Balmoral Hotel

J.K. Rowling finished writing the final book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” at this luxurious hotel in Edinburgh. She even left a note in one of the rooms that reads, “JK Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room (552) on 11th Jan 2007.”

This street is close to Victoria Street and is said to have contributed to the inspiration for Diagon Alley’s winding and magical atmosphere.
